The region is a haven for a variety of wildlife from wildflowers to birds, insects and small reptiles. The changing seasons bring new delights to the landscapes with the freshness of the Spring and the golden, lilac hues of Autumn. Whatever the time of year there is plenty to see and delight in. A photographer and bird watchers paradise. From our gardens, experience flocks of swallows & swifts dive bombing the swimming pools at dawn and dusk, the beautiful songs of the skylark, the familiar sound of the cuckoo, the amazing sight of the hoopoe wandering around the lawn, the magnificent hen harriers soaring high on thermals in the sky or spot the wings of the heron flying by. Down by the River Boutonne watch the kingfishers and in the forests of Aulnay and Boutonne marvel at the many birds of prey. Hedgehogs, toads and frogs are also frequent visitors to our gardens as well as many types of small Lizards. You will also find fossils in our garden from long times past when the area was under water. The biggest treat of all is that very special moment when you spot the Golden Oriole. There are nature reserves to visit nearer to the coast including the Lillau-des-Niges on the island of Ré home to marsh harriers and spoonbills to name but a few and the Marais de Möeze near the island of Oleron and the chance to see the hobby and short-toed eagle. |
