Mussels and Oysters The region is famous for sweet flavoured mussels, farmed locally on the islands of Ré and Oleron, snails known as 'Cagouilles’ in Charentes and ‘Lumas’ in Poitou. The marennes Oleron is also the largest Oyster producing farm in France. Experience these and other typical seafood delicacies like king prawns, langoustines and clams in any of the many restaurants ( the nearest to us at Le Foyer in Melleran – 10 mins away in the car ) or buy them fresh in any of the local markets and supermarkets. Cheeses We are in the centre of the Goats Trail where you can visit the many farms producing the different varieties of goats cheese. Sample them on the farms or go to one of the many local markets. Fruit The sweet Charantaise Melon is plentiful and inexpensive in the summer months. A perfect refreshing accompliment as a starter or sweet to any meal. Wine of the region There are many small wine producers. Traditionally the grapes flavour a lovely crisp fruity white wine. The rosé and red wines are also very popular and whatever your choice it is excellent value for money. In Chef-Boutonne we have two ‘Caves’ where you can taste and buy wines of the region. Pineau History suggests that this sweet fortified wine was produced by accident when grape juice was mistakenly poured into a barrel of Cognac. You can drink it blanc or rose. This chilled wine is perfect as an aperitif or with frois gras, blue cheeses or a fruity dessert. Cognac Discover the four ‘Vineyard Trails’ signposted Les Etapes du Cognac. Stops on the trails will allow you to experience the seasonal farming of the grapes in the vineyards and village life for those linked in some way to the wine producing industry. You can also visit the old town of Cognac and enjoy one of the interesting guided tours around one of the famous Cognac Houses including a short river boat trip to Hennessy or a train ride around the estate of Remy Martin.
